To Those Who Would Be Kings

Based on an essay tentatively attributed to Thom Hartmann

Were you mad when folks who voted couldn’t get their votes to count?

Are you troubled that the rich get all the tax breaks?

When ICE kidnaps college students and tears parents from their kids?

No, you’re just mad ‘cause a sick kid might get health care.

Are you angry that our taxes go to fund illegal wars?

Are you troubled by the genocide in Gaza?

Do you get mad when we use torture, not due process like we oughta?

No, you’re just mad ‘cause a sick kid might get health care.

Are you mad they’re wasting millions on a stupid tank parade

While our service workers can’t get living wages?

Did you protest, did you shout, when all the fat cats got bailed out?

No, you’re just mad ‘cause a sick kid might get health care.

Are you mad that banks and grifters just keep piling up the dough

While we lose our jobs, our health care, and our pensions?

Do your cold hearts skip a beat to see the unhoused in the streets?

No, you’re just mad ‘cause a sick kid might get health care.

Well, you can call us socialists or libtards if you like,

But we Grannies know the truth, and that’s for sure

When the people’s needs are met, then you can surely bet

That we’ll all rejoice when sick kids get free health care.
